Philosophy and Beliefs
Under the Cedars first and foremost intention is to connect children with nature- especially the land, waters, animals and plants where they live. Our programs are steeped in play, risk, socioemotional communication and community building. There is a focus on naturalist and survival skills that are developmentally appropriate as well as herbal education.
-We believe that every child has a right to a safe and nurturing school environment, whether it's indoors or out.
-We believe children are competent and capable individuals who deserve communication that also reflects this.
-We believe that should a structured curriculum be offered, it should be developmentally appropriate, child centered, steeped in play, allowing the children to discover and experiment with their fine and gross motor skills, to learn resilience through risk and to develop a language of empathy through social-emotional communication by way of storytelling and conflict resolution.
-We believe nature has the ability to provide for risk taking, creativity, and growth in a way that no teacher, curriculum or classroom ever can.
-We believe children should spend as much of their day outside in nature whenever possible, in all weather. We believe teaching children about seasonal shifts and how we are all connected through nature is vital and helps them to understand why being a good steward of the natural world is so important.
-We believe in the importance and necessity of wonder. Educators should always teach to the wonder of their students, teaching them to ask questions and to investigate. Educators should cater to their curiosity and offer real problem-solving opportunities.
-We believe in the beauty of the song and storytelling, and both will be incorporated into every program day.
-We believe in the mindset "It takes a Village" and building a nature school community where we can celebrate one another and also lean on each other when needed, children and adults alike.
-We believe in a low impact lifestyle, refraining from using disposable items as much as possible including how we pack our snack and lunches. Using reusable containers and bags is highly encouraged. Everything we pack in, we pack out.
-We believe a child's head should be filled with memories of wild places where they played and have familiarity with local trails and native plants.
